Discord Estimates Your Age Before It Asks

Discord's September 2026 age system sorts accounts from tenure and activity before it asks for an ID. The 2025 vendor breach is why the ID path was the fight.

TL;DR

  • —Starting September 23, 2026, Discord assigns accounts to adult, teen, or unconfirmed from account signals, not from a message scan.
  • —Discord says about 90 percent of users will not be asked to confirm. The rest can use a face scan, an ID, a card, a store age signal, or k-ID AgeKey.
  • —Discord says facial estimation stays on-device, while ID checks involve a vendor. It says the separate customer-service manual review process involved in the 2025 breach has been retired.
What shipped On September 23, 2026, Discord began a global age-assurance rollout. Australia and the UK were already on an earlier system. Everywhere else, the company estimates an age group from account signals: how long the account has existed, device and activity data, and the kinds of servers it uses. CTO Stanislav Vishnevskiy said the system does not read messages, calls, or other content, and that its accuracy is meant to be in the range of biometric estimation. Discord's figure is that about 90 percent of users will not be asked to confirm. The buckets are adult, teen (13–17), and unconfirmed. Teens get a separate message-request inbox and a warning when a friend request comes from someone with no mutual friends. Unconfirmed accounts are the ones Discord says it cannot place. Those users can confirm with facial age estimation, an ID scan, a credit card, an Apple App Store or Google Play age signal, Google Wallet, or k-ID's AgeKey, which Discord describes as a passkey-style proof kept on the device. What the company promises The data path depends on the method. Discord says facial age estimation runs on your device and sends an estimated age, rather than the video selfie. An ID check sends the document through a vendor; Discord's vendor guide names Veratad as a provider used by k-ID. The guide says the selfie and extracted ID data are deleted after verification. These are the company's published handling rules, not an independent audit of deletion. The September 2025 breach involved a customer-service vendor's manual review process. Discord says that process has been retired and manual age reviews now go through k-ID. Describing it as the same vendor path used for all UK and Australian age checks was too broad. You can see your assigned group under User Settings → Account Status. If the estimate is wrong, Discord offers confirmation methods; availability depends on the account and region. Its vendor guide explains the different data paths. The part that is not a choice The February plan was face or ID for everyone Discord wanted to check. Backlash paused it. The September plan estimates first, so most people never see a prompt. That is a narrower ask. It is still an age file built from activity the account did not submit for that purpose. The UK and US age-check laws are the pressure behind the product. The product is the part that runs where those laws do not. Updated October 3, 2026: added Discord's original announcement and technical documentation, distinguished on-device facial estimation from ID uploads, and corrected the description of the retired customer-service review process.
